There's never been a portable that can display graphics like the NX will be able to. You're going to want that extra screen real estate, it would be a waste to have it confined to a rinky dink little 5 inch display.
Beyond that a Tegra X1/X2 would melt a little handheld casing in an hour. There needs to be some casing space to dissipate heat and house a larger battery.
And a 6.2 inch screen is perfectly sized when held vertically for 3DS Virtual Handheld (the 16:9 top 3DS screen fits exactly perfectly at that size).
This was always going to have to be tablet size. A Tegra X2 bends the Vita chip over and makes it say daddy, a chip that powerful needs some leg room to stretch its legs.
