If it is a direct they would have to do something for the press. And they have done something like a direct/press even before. Where they started the press even before the direct so the press could get a good hands on with the software, and when the direct was finally over they encouraged the press that was there to do their reactions on their various sites, I know IGN did that and right after the direct was over they had a live reaction feed from the site they did the press event.
So this way Nintendo doesn't have to have that long of a direct, though I still think it will be longer than the usually 30-to-45 minutes. And then the press would help pad out the time.
