THIIIIIIS; I was wondering if anyone else had this thought process. Honestly, Galaxy's a hell of a lot closer in structure and point to point gameplay to 3D Land/World than it is to 64/Sunshine.

It's kind of a continuim.  It seems like a big part of Galaxy's level design was to keep players from getting lost.  The idea of planetoids gives you some freedom to explore, but also keeps you from wandering too far in any direction from getting lost.  3D World just takes things a step further in that direction.

I just always found it interesting that everyone lumps the Galaxy games in with 64/Sunshine even though beyond basic controls and the fact that you're going after power stars to unlock levels, the games' level designs and general structure are drastically different.
