This was something I wanted to bring up if no one else did, but also something I wanted to look more into after reading all the replies. After doing maybe 15-20 minutes of research, what I've learned is that it requires a bit more than that to actually risk losing the trademark. Though for something like Metroid, it could be plausible, but seems slightly improbable. Nintendo's probably handling it the way they are to keep their IPs "clean."
