Usually, going simple is better.

 

That's basically what I suggested, except you'll have the options to use sticks/grips while on the go, use it without any controllers attached, and use circle pads on the TV if one actually prefers that. 

I disagree with that in general and especially in this case. Having options is better than no options, and Nintendo has been really good about that with the Wii and Wii U. Gaming wouldn't have evolved to where it is now if things were kept simple.
