Why would GF and Nintendo do the incredibly stupid thing of releasing two brand new mainline Pokemon games half a year apart? I could understand if this was a third version being put on the NX and jazzed up to make it the must-have version, but this would be a brand new game that would totally undermine S&M and split the player base.

*cough* Pokemon Colosseum *cough, cough*. But to be fair, Colosseum and Ruby/Sapphire were released a year a part. NX needs new and engaging blockbuster titles, Pokemon is definitely one of them, and I think Game Freak is done with the 3rd wheel model of Pokemon. Unless they add a considerable amount of bonus content there's no need for it. Would people still buy it...yup. Is it necessary at this point...nope.

*cough* Pokemon Colosseum is pointless because the games now have a built-in Colosseum in the form of the Battle Frontier/Subway/Resort/Maison/Whatever, not to mention online functionality*. Whew, sorry about that. I must be really coming down with something in August. Hope it's not that Zika virus I've been hearing about lately.

If you think GF is done with the third wheel model of Pokemon, why do you think a game that hasn't been released in a decade and two Pokemon generations is still a thing? The last Colosseum-like game was Battle Revolution. And guess what? It bombed, at least in terms of Pokemon sales, because it added nothing of value other than battling on a television instead of a DS. A new game of that ilk would be even more pointless, with the advances in hardware and online functionality since then.

You talk about what's necessary, but a Colosseum is far more work than a third version of a mainline game, and the only thing it would necessarily add is potentially a new story. And has the ever been a console or Colosseum-like game that had a full, original story that took place in a canon region like Kanto? Nope.
