Yet more people carry around iPads and Microsoft Surface and Samsung tablets that sell several times more than 3DS or Vita in the last 5 years. 

The 3DS/Vita sold maybe 10-11 million combined last year, tablets sold almost 250 million. 

Handheld enthusiasts may grumble about but I think the actual real general public has no problem with tablet sized/weight devices. 

Most 10'' tablets also weight less than 500 gram and most 7 - 8'' tablets weight less than 400 gram. Also the weight distribution of a tablet and a handheld are quite different.

My ancient iPad 1 3G with 730 gram felt a lot lighter than the 600 gram Nvidia Shield handheld, that felt like a brick.
