the only place for a handheld in my life is on the train on my way to/from work.  if this cannot fit in my pocket than i personally have no use for it.

too big to be portable, in far too many ways undesireable as a home console.

That's fine but the statistics show you are in a very small minority. 

Sony shipped 13 million Vitas give or take in about 4 years. 

There were 205 million tablets shipped last year alone. 

Clearly in form factor terms, people are more than willing to buy a larger form factor device, it just has to be a smart device. 

Even the 3DS side, the more pocket friendly regular sized 3DS sells worse than the bigger XL model. 

People want their bigger screens. 

Beyond that a device limited to pocket size would also be extremely limited in its horsepower. You would have something probably worse than the Wii U in terms of graphics, whereas a tablet/Wii U gamepad size form factor can probably get you into even PS4/XB1 port territory (at a lowered resolution).
