Apple has to see how big gaming is (biggest form of media) and they do need a foot in the door asap.

They already control one of the doors of one of the most lucrative forms of gaming in the world, with barely any efford. Just fees alone on every app on the appstore must be a fortune. Also, having to and doing it are two different things.
