I still believe that if Super Mario Maker had been a launch title on the Wii U, the console might have had a different fate.

SMM was the first game that adequately explained to gamers what the gamepad could do. Had it been a launch title, I could have seen the Wii U becoming a magnet for various types of creation software and it could have spurred a fair bit of innovation from 3rd parties in this area. Instead, Nintendo made the mistake of thinking: "we don't know what to do with the gamepad, but maybe if we put it out there then we and 3rd parties can figure out how to use it as we go" That doesn't fly and hopefully Nintendo has learned not to release hardware unless they have a complete vision beforehand for what they want the said hardware to accomplish.
