Shit, how could I forget Donkey Kong? Besides the original being truly iconic, DKC2 and Tropical Freeze are among the best 2D platformers I've ever experienced, and DKC, DKC3, and DKCR are magnificent also.

There are so many good series! It's easy to overlook a few.

It's still bewildering to me how Nintendo and its partners have managed to keep these franchises so evergreen over the years. I mean how many video game series jump out of the gate strong and stay strong 20, 25, 30 years later? Outside of Nintendo it's hard to think of any.

I think a big part of it is getting just the right balance of freshness and familiarity.

For example, Super Mario World is quite different from Mario 64, Ocarina of Time is quite different from Breath of the Wild, and Donkey Kong Country Returns is quite different from the original SNES trilogy, but these changes never (or almost never) come at the expense of what made the series great to begin with.
