You should read manga, then, because there are a ton of them in the zombie apocalypse genre.
Apocalypse no Toride is where the kid is in a juvenille prison when things go down. It gets pretty crazy because some of the zombies start evolving, almost like new life-forms. Tons of friction with other survivors, too.
I haven't read I Am A Hero but it's one of the most critically acclaimed manga in Japan. From what I understand, it seems to be about a semi-delusional otaku who happens to be one of the few people in Japan with a gun when the apocalypse starts.
