It's not pointless. I think that you're missing the point.  We're talking about products which have everything to do with popularity because it typically equates to sales and consumers being happy with that product.  The reason why black and white movies aren't being made anymore is because it's irrelevant in today's market. No one wants new movies made in black and white. If black and white movies are actually bad or not in the sense you're talking about doesn't matter.  

Given that Justin Beiber and Twilight are popular, the link between quality and success is tenuous at best. :P
