Your assumptions are incorrect and therefore your conclusions are as well.

1)The market wasn't downstream all along.Look at 2)

2)Nintendo has an upmarket. They bought Gamecube and GBA and moved to DS.

3)It's always the games.

4)Upstreaming has been going on since Mario Galaxy. The increased sales of their franchise games compared to their last  gen counterparts indicate this.

Now to explain.

While Nintendo does have an existing upmarket it clearly had the minority mindshare(I don't need to elaborate this,we all know it's true)

Nintendo realized that no matter what it did the majority of the market would slight it,even if they carried out their intended objective  to perfection.Read through Malstrom's articles for proof.

As a result Nintendo focused on keeping the majority of it's fans and bringing in new gamers to increase their influence.According  to Nintendo most people love to play games and video games shouldn't have been an exception, however this wasn't the case. They identified 2 obstacles that faced most non gamers.

1)Lack of practical controls.

Here's an example:"Hardcore" gamers praise the analog stick for racing and ridicule motion control. What they don't realize however is that to the average joe it is confusing and to an extent rubbish.Who the hell drives with an analog stick in their car? This turns off more people than we realize. My mom wanted to play Double Dash from seeing it but took a look at my controller and never bothered.

2)Even if the people mentioned above managed to get past the controls, they were then faced with the realization that there wasn't much content that kept their interest.i.e. mostlty violen/blockbuster material.

Nintendo then dealt with the both obstacles but realized beforehand that sooner or later saturation would occur.

Face it, most people are tired playing the same thing over and over and wish they could have something more robust .

The process by which Nintendo convinces these people to undergo this transition is called upstreaming.

I'll cut it here to bump the thread.Reply and I'll continue to the actual meat of the issue.

1. Yes he had, but: 2. They had the upmarket, but this is a question about upstreaming the Touch Generations gamers. 4. Don't forget about the Excite Truck. Besides, look at Mario Party 8 and Wario Ware, they definately fit the upstreaming strategy by teaching people how to use Wii Remote in various ways. And they did also work as dowstreaming the upmarket (this is where MKWii for example works better). Saying that Nintendo only tries to upstream is incorrect, since it also tries to downstream. In other words; get all the gamers to play all the games.

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.
