If Nintendo had scrapped the Wii U and just made a "normal" console even for 2012, I think they'd be sitting pretty with a 2nd place position right now above the XBox One and be collecting a decent amount of third party royalties.
So it's not like they can't complain about a lack of chances. People were hungry for new hardware that was an actual upgrade from the 360/PS3 because that generation went on for so long. That's part and parcel why IMO the PS4 sold so well in its first year despite not having a ton of great games, people were just dying to upgrade to something ... anything. Wii U was no upgrade though.
