From a technical standpoint it seems unlikely, right now everything points to NX having a different architecture, a controller without a screen, and completely different specs, so backward compatibility would be very difficult to do.
On the other hand I think Nintendo really wants to and needs to bring BC:
Firstly to appease the Wii U Owners. Give them the ability to transfer their saves and everything, just like from Wii to Wii U and keep playing the games they bought on a new console without any extra cost.
And secondly to boost their launch lineup: Wii U had some of the best Nintendo games in years, and many people still havent played them. I actually know quite a lot of people that are saying: "Yes that looks awesome, and I'd love to play it, but the Wii U isnt going to be around for much longer anyway, it would be a waste!"
If all Wii U Games are compatible from day 1 it would give the NX a huge boost, after all many of those games, eg. Smash or Xenoblade, took many long years to develop. Just throwing that away and making new entries for NX would be a waste and take a whole lot of time.
The difficult part is: How can you offer BC for the gamepad if the NX doesnt have one? The best option I can see here is that the Wii U Gamepad will be compatible with NX and Nintendo will start selling Gamepads by themselves for a decent price. Another possiblity would be the integration of the often rumored NX-Handheld. Architecture and the like can easily be solved via emulation (see Xbox One BC), but the Gamepad could pose a major problem.
As a Wii U owner I really hope they to implement some kind of BC, there have been rumors about ports, and I'm NOT looking forward to buying the same games once more!
The new guy.
