Do we have a reliable understanding of which games he's had a part in, and to what degree? If not, I'm not sure we can really judge.
From everything I've heard about him, I get the sense that maybe he's a better manager than he is a designer nowadays.
I mean, what are the best things Nintendo has produced in recent years? Mario Galaxy, Xenoblade Chronicles, Fire Emblem Awakening/Fates, Mario Kart 8, Splatoon and Mario Maker.
How many of those was he involved with heavily? I don't think he was the lead designer on any of them, was he?
