IIRC, that was basically Nintendo's goal. They wanted to show people how fun game design could be. Granted, real game design is far more work than play since life doesn't automatically come with a pretty GUI and pre-coded object functionality, but it's not a bad introduction to one of the more basic concepts of game design if you haven't played with the more complex Little Big Planet level editor before.
