I've had times when the tilt sensor did not work right (this would result in strange IR pointer directions).
The solution I got from Nintendo tech support was to hold the remote upside down, then swing it into the palm of your hand. This did fix my problem and it could be a similar solution for yours, if not call Nintendo to get it replaced.
