This is pretty much it. When the link cable was released, GBA was supposed to be able to be use as a controller in (selected) games.

Well, yes. I see you did not read between the lines that the Wii U controller is overshooting the core audience and maybe only the high end user that likes to play with hardware is interested in the controller.
