The original yellow is considered the most difficult version. It came out in the late 90's. That's kind of sad, no?

It's considered the hardest because the starting pokemon are all weak or ineffective against the first gym, due to the fact that the game was not designed around starting with an electric type. After that it becomes just as easy as the rest of the series.
