While CA: First Avenger stumbled out the gate, the trilogy got progressively better, with higher stakes and stronger influence on the MCU. There had to be 3 X-men-ish movies before The Last Stand was retconned, but Captain America is in a healthier position than any other superhero movie franchise. The others are on life support and if the new Spider-Man takes off, Civil War gets some of the credit for getting the hype train moving. A botched first movie is FAR better than a botched third. |
The Dark Knight Rises made over a billion dollars and, even with its flaws, was still considered a critical success. TDKR didn't get a continuation becuase Nolan didn't want to make another one and Warner Bros saw the money Marvel was making off of its universe and wanted to do the same.

Yeah pretty much, I'm sure WB would've loved to have Nolan and Bale do a 4th Batman movie for them, but once they both moved on Warner wanted in on that "superhero super team" monies.
