Book versus show have very different versions of that character (especially in regards to Northern Campaign), so understand  why people feel so differently about him.  We don't even know how it ends for him in the book, but guessing far better decision making and complex battle tactics.

In the end, he will die. Most of his army is also gone in the books, IIRC.

Without Melisander killing his brother, we don't know what would've happened in the fight.

He also lost seriously at Blackwater.
