Okami is a great alternative to Zelda. And while I do like its style more, it isnt vibrant enough for me to try it. I'm not sure why but some of the washed out look of it really bothers me XD if the game itself was brighter and felt more like a wood cut painting (like the devs were going for) then I'd probably try it out.
But I will agree that Okami probably has better characters. Characters in Zelda tend to be more shallow than theyre given credit for. I've never felt there was really good character development in a Zelda game except Link's Awakening where I felt the atmosphere and relationship between Marin and Link was very strong and yet still subtle.
