64, Sunshine and Galaxy are part of the same serie because it's basically the same category even if it's very different in settings. It's a big 3D game with a big view around and the decors are built this way.

3D World have nothing to do with it. It's a sized down game, with very small mechanics and game designs. It's basically NSMB in a semi 3D view built for multiplayer.

It's definitely not a true 3D Mario game.

Mario Galaxy is much more different than Mario Sunshine and Mario 64, actually Mario Galaxy is more similar to Mario 3D World than to M64/Galaxy. But they are all true 3D Mario games.
