No, historically  2D mario always sells better than 3D mario. Always! 2D mario is pretty much the only thing selling the Wii U at launch.  When Super Mario 3D world came out it didn't even put the wii U up YOY for most of the time period. 2D mario has the history of breaking records. 3D  mario doesn't do that. Launching an HD console with a 2D Mario probably wasn't the smartest way to showcase the console though. Especially a 2D Mario that basically used the same art style as the Wii/DS games.
