I own it and have recently beaten it and totally disagree. The whole inability to move the camera and keep it behind me made the game 2.5D... not 3D. It's an awesome game, but imo, it's not mainline Mario. It's not a 2D game and it's not a 3D game... but a whole new category.
FYI, I still consider SM64 the best 3D Mario. SMB3 is the best 2D title.
