Because the Wii U isn't selling very well. If it wasn't selling so bad, the NX would be more likely to launch next year than this year.

3DS doesn't sell well either. They even had to lower their 3DS forecast...

The handheld market is a much bigger market for Nintendo. They have much to lose if they don't move on.
