Have they been developing mobile games for the past two years? Did they release further details in late January 2014? Are the released games mini-games?

Actually yes, Nintendo revealed during the smartphone announcement that they had been looking into smartphone development for like a year+ beforehand and "mini-games" is kind of a catch all term for any smartphone game as the games tend to be small, bite-size experiences, which pretty much describes Miitomo to a tee.
