When Nintendo was asked which games they were going to make for smartphones, Iwata made it clear that Virtual Console was not up for consideration because the differences in control input would not serve the experiences well. There is an understanding that the lack of physical buttons is detrimental, so why would Nintendo make a controller without them? It would be detrimental for many of their longrunning IPs, and those are among the cornerstones that have to sell the hardware. A controller like this supposed prototype would tremendously undermine Nintendo's aspirations to sell a lot of dedicated gaming hardware.

That makes it a stupid idea. I can't think of any angle that would make such a controller a good consideration for Nintendo. Therefore it can't be real.

Ah, but by abandoning the archaic models of yesteryear, Nintendo will finally be free to truly embrace its inner creativity and create unlimited surprises for customers. Virtual Console games may need buttons, but Virtual Console games are by definition The Past, and by and large Virtual Console has been properly relegated to the dustbin at NoA/NoE. Moreover, the casuals clearly find buttons intimidating, so this way Nintendo will once again have a system stupd enough to get them back into that golden Blue Ocean.

This act of genius is demonstrable proof that Nintendo is embracing the future and giving the people what they really want. B3L13V3!!!
