I think that everyone is taking these rumors to literally. There's way to much that could be in the pipeline in favor of the NX that are unknown. Especially if we go by all of the patents Nintendo filed, it seems like there could be a base unit that has a specific amount of processing power and the ability to add supplemental external processing units for those that desire higher spec consoles.
I actually think that Nintendo may open the external processing units to 3rd party hardware manufacturer's to create and sell. It would probably be more efficient for Samsung, Dell, Acer or Lenovo to manufacture and market and external unit than for Nintendo to package and stock it themselves. The patent states as though the source for this extra processing power was open to a wide variety of devices, so it definitely doesn't sound like a closed box.
