You convey that Nintendo has started a habit of censorship because they were in the mood to do it, but the frequency of these instances was caused by the games themselves. Fatal Frame: Maiden of the Black Water, Xenoblade Chronicles X and Fire Emblem Fates. What did all of these games have in common? Depiction of underage girls in revealing clothes. The age of consent in Japan is 13, but it's higher pretty much everywhere else as far as markets for video games are concerned. So instead of running into legal problems, Nintendo removed or made small adjustments to the content because doing so had no impact on the quality of the games. It is the simplest and most effective solution. The legal problems are real: http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/26362/dead-or-alive-dimensions-banned-in-sweden If you understand the reason for the instances of self-censorship, you realize that there is no basis to believe that this will eventually expand to include the removal of meaningful content in games. |
Did you watch that vid? How do you explain why they removed bikini outfits? Honestly, what sweden does is irrevelent in the video game market.
As for your excuse of why they censored those games. The simple solution is to just adjust the ages of the fictional characters. The japanese have done that before with other games and mediums. The new nintendo boss has a different viewpoint on this censorship compared to the old one.
In just one game they went from censoring the touching the characters minigame to taking out bikinis. There's already a bit of a snowball effect. It wouldn't take much for nintendo censor more of their games.
