I watched the older Ghibli movies raw. I used fan-translated scripts people posted online. This was before any of the Ghibli movies other than Totoro and Grave of the Fireflies were released in the west and the average internet conection was really too slow for mass streaming. A half-Japanese friend sent them to me on VHS. It was actually a really good experience, though I didn't learn much. I absolutely fell in love with Whisper of the Heart watching that way and it became my favorite Ghibli movie. Only Yesterday was also a really nice surprise.
