And personally I don't think a prevalence of bad behaviour makes it acceptable. Just because I expect it doesn't mean it's not annoying.

Only that in this particular case the spamming is beneficial for the series. When it's taking so long between new releases, then a new generation of gamers isn't likely to show much interest in the series. 

Simple answer; don't take so long between mainline entries.
