I am in no way not an athiest because it would be depressing. I'm an agnostic because 3000 years ago we KNEW the Earth was flat. 2000 years ago we KNEW the sun was drawn by a chariot. 1000 years ago we KNEW that if we did not obey our lords, we would be punished in the afterlife. And now we "know" that there is nothing going on in our brains whenever we die.

Just because we don't detect it right now doesn't mean it isn't happening. But that sure as hell isn't reason to put all your eggs in that basket. Agnosticism.

Exactly.  This video perfectly sums up my view:

However I have to add that you shouldn't assume people believed the way ppopular culture assumes they did.  For instance they didn't really believe the world was flat, and I gauruntee a lot of people (Maybe most) back then didn't REALLY think a chariot pulled the sun.  But that is an entirely different topic.

Philosophers didn't, no. But most people did, just like most people still hold a religious belief today.

And I dunno, you'd have to be fairly hardcore to make THAT many statues of dieties you don't believe in. Or the temples.

I mean, the Colossus of Rhodes, man.
