Yeah, he was far too confident and focused on keeping her alive for that one day. It's not like he's dealing with a random accident. The killer might not be someone who depends on opportunity but rather someone who selects his victims. In that case, all he did was delay the killer taking action, not stop him completely. He tried hard but it most likely is nowhere near that easy, especially since that other kid in his group was also a victim.
His mom is so cool, though. Makes me really sad for what happened in the future and the way their relationship fell apart.
