If they really want to make changes at who and what is nominated, why not start with the many questionable choices and pity-nominations the Academy has doled out over the years.

Forrest Gump winning Best Picture over Pulp Fiction
Shakespeare in Love winning Best Picture over Saving Private Ryan
Stanley Kubrick never winning anything, none of his films ever being nominated for Best Picture
Francis Ford Coppola not winning Best Director for The Godfather
Crash winning Best Picture over Brokeback Mountain and Munich

Those are the real tragedies. Fix the system, the rest will follow.

Stanley Kubrick won an Oscar for best Special Effects on 2001: A Space Odyssey. Dr. Strangelove, A Clockwork Orange, and Barry Lyndon were all nominated for Best Picture (though none of them won)

Coppola won Best Director for The Godfater Part II. Along with his 4 other awards for writing and producing I don't think he cares too much about losing to Cabaret.

My mistake, you're correct, I was recalling from the top of my head. But I guess my point was that a lot of great work/artists are overlooked by not just the Academy, but by any institution.

Yes there is undoubtedly a discrepancy between what races are represented in nominations, but the real discussion should be about why quality work is sometimes overlooked in favor of popularity contests. That is, if these so-called award shows are to be given much weight and importance in the first place.
