Wii U has already demonstrated that it's capable of handling this calibre of graphics at 1080p, so if it ends up being 720p/900p that will be a rather unflattering statement about Tantalus's technical skills, or lack thereof.

I'm not so sure. TP has a lot more going on than WWHD did. I'm thinking that they might go for a lower resolution and add edge AA like they did with 3D world. If they did that then I'd have no issue with a lower resolution. 

TPHD has simpler lighting and shaders than WWHD, and its still a Gamecube game in terms of complexity, I don't see any reason it couldn't be rendered at 1080p. To use another frame of reference, Monster Hunter 3 is 1080p on Wii U, and it's quite close to TPHD in terms of graphics:

 

I have a sneaking suspicion that it's the Twilight Princess engine giving them some hiccups.  Cause they aren't completely ignoring mesh improvements.  Interiors and dungeons have gotten noticeable improvements to mesh quality, especially with rounded objects like pillars and arches.  I am guessing the very old engine made improvements of the same type across all exteriors troublesome.  And Tantalus isn't Nintendo EAD.  They may have elected to avoid toying with the engine code too much.
