Since when is buying a console like playing the lottery? If it was some knockoff that I picked up from the internet then I would be gambling. A 10 dollar movie is a gamble. 330 dollars on a system from a reputable company is not a gamble.

So you are saying that if a system does mediocre and they stop supporting it early that we should "gamble" on the next one?

bad odds my friend.

It's always a gamble to buy a new console. No one is saying you "should" gamble on it, but rather that you need to realize that it is a gamble.
They don't guarantee you any games beyond the ones they announce. And even then, they some times don't deliver on that regard.

Don't confuse "expectations" with gurantees or entitlement.
You made an investment. You don't always get the return you're hoping for on an investement.

I don't think Nintendo fear losing their existing audience for a few reasons. For one, like Rol described, many of them are like abused wives, and will keep coming back no matter what as long as they put out a new Zelda, 3D Mario, etc. But on top of that, you have to take risks to win. In this situattion, do you think Nintendo are content with only selling 13m per console cycle?
I really don't think so. I think they could invest their money in much more lucrative things than that. So their current fanbase isn't as valuable to them as some might think.
Have they even earned back the billions they spent for R&D for the WiiU? Who knows. But even if they have, they're not in this industry to make the least amount of money on their investments as possible, when they know the potential is much higher.

That's not to say that they shouldn't still support their failed console to a degree. And they've probably done that. But people need to understand that it will be proportional to the situation they're in. The losses they're willing to take will depend on this.

Some people are demanding an exclusize Zelda game becasue "every other Nintendo console got it". Well, this is not every other Nintendo console. This is their by far worst selling console ever. Some people don't realize that their ideal dream scenario won't always be realized no matter how bad the situation turns out.

I do not care if Zelda is exclusive to the Wii U. But after "30 years" wink wink, of giving us quality titles I do not think it is gambling to buy a system with a company that I trust. Sure, they could have sold me a 330 dollar system and only released the games that they announced before launch. But is that a company anyone wants to support? Seriously? There is no gambling, if you cannot be a company that gives you a quality way of gaming life, then you should not be selling consoles. The Wii U has not made any friends, but as long as they do right by us, I for one will continue on the journey. What does do right by us mean?I do not know, I will know when I feel it has been done and tell you.

Maybe don't buy a console at launch then? Is there some gun to people's heads forcing them to buy a console straight away? Wait a few years, and you'll get a matured library where you can gauge if the available games appeal to you or not.

But the bottom line is as of right now if you like Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda, Metroid, Smash Brothers, Splatoon, Pikmin, DKC, etc. etc. the only place to play those games is a Nintendo console so to me every Nintendo console is more than worth it.

What the fuck does $300 over five years even buy you these days? For me it's well worth it for Nintendo games, that's never really been my issue with the company.
