Read up on some of Nintendo's comments regarding the Wii U, it was well above what they actually wanted to charge for it even the current President said he disagreed with the execution of how the platform was handled before launch. Believe me a cheaper platform is no doubt something they're aiming for with a more focused approach that actually accounts for all groups this time and last I check Tomodachi life cost more then $10. Casual gamers and non-gamers aren't the same group either. Apple TV is not really a dedicated console even the remote is just that a remote and nothing close to a Wiimote, that's a terrible comparison to even bring up as it's primarily a device for services like Hulu, Netflix etc... It's a microconsole at best. |
The remote is just like a Wiimote and why would a casual care if its a "microconsole" (do they even know what that term means?).
Casual gaming is actually wayyyyyyy bigger today than it ever was under Nintendo. It's just on a different (quite frankly better) form factor.
Apple and Google like I said have taken it to heights Nintendo never could have dreamed of, it quite frankly has eclipsed core gaming in many ways.
Clash of Clans is bigger than any new game IP on a Nintendo, MS, or Sony platform this generation, so is Boom Beach. So is Mobile Strike. So is Game Of War.
Angry Birds is getting a goddamn huge budget feature film.
"Download now for free on the App Store" is the no.1 marketing phrase in gaming today, I heard it like 50 freaking times every week watching TV. Nintendo losing this audience was entirely predictable, a Wii or DS is boring device to a casual when compared to an iPhone which does 100 things a casual consumer would enjoy, a Wii or DS just plays games, and that isn't appealling to a casual when given the choice. Throw in free games and that's just the last kick in the balls to console casual gaming.
