I’m 63 and I definitely plan to get this, but not for the reasons anybody has emphasized. Yes I need to lose weight (a lot) and I definitely would like to get in better shape. But as some of the skeptics have pointed out, there are plenty of other ways to do that.

But what I am most interested in is balance. Most people my age have real balance issues and often don’t know it until they fall and hurt themselves. According to a top physical therapist, as we age, our balance deteriorates largely because we don’t use it as much as when we were younger, more sports and activities like riding a bike. There is no equipment in the gym to really help with this and relatively few exercises like walking backwards etc. There is essentially nothing available to measure balance accurately beyond a crude, “let’s see how long you can stand on one foot” or some very expensive specialized equipment which may not work as well. According to the physical therapist, the Wii Fit board is the most accurate device available to give real time feedback on balance. They plan to install some to use for balance training.

He recommends that people over 45 seriously consider this. The greatest single cause of physical disability in seniors is injuries from falling.
