My ideal Zelda spinoff would be a 2 player co-op game. One player controls Link (uses items and tunics, better with sword) and the other one controls Zelda (uses all kinds of magic, better with archery). A more linear experience to avoid travelling in an open world with two people, just go from dungeon to dungeon, all the puzzles and bosses need collaboration to be completed. Less focus on exploration and more in character interaction (combat combos with both characters, competition similar to that on FourSwords, cutseces and ingame dialogue between them, voice chat during gameplay...).  It would be similar to Portal 2 co-op, but with Zelda.

Wow, that sounds pretty cool actually. I'd be happy with a spin off on this model as well.

This only goes to show that there are many great possibilities for Zelda, and I'm sure people here have other bright ideas too. It's really up to Nintendo to really expand the franchise... it's not that difficult.

I know! This could have worked so well on the WiiU, in both online and local multiplayer. The gamepad would serve as the screen for the second player, so no need to split-screen, and it would have justified the use of the gamepad in a big way. And if it took too many resources to make, just use the WindWaker HD engine and assets, that way people would be far more open to the idea (every co-op Zelda has used cartoony or sprite graphics, so it would fit well).

You know it deserves the GOTY.
