"Forward thinking" is not easy to do or everyone would do it.
Nintendo didn't even invent the Wiimote, the technology fell into their laps only after the guy who invented got turned down by Sony and Microsoft. Nintendo wasn't even his first or second choice.
Wii U controller is all Nintendo, that's what happens when they make something in-house. Wii was a lot of good fortune and good timing.
