Depends on what it is, if NX is a platform that can be upgraded, I'd probably rather just pay $200 for a "supplemental computing device" (Nintendo patented this) that beefs up my existing system rather than pay another $400 for a PS5. Plus I already have my existing library of games on my NX.
I can see the appeal of such an approach.
Most of the "next-gen" leap is honestly going to be eaten up by the need to support 4K resolution, which is 4x the pixels of 1080P, meaning graphically it may not even be that big of a leap as people think. For a next-gen "4K system" to match say a 3 TFLOP current gen system @1080p, it would have to be in the 12TFLOP+ range.
For Nintendo for the dedicated home console it could be quite smart just to make a really strong 1080P console, PS5/XB2 could have a lot of headaches significantly outperforming while having to render at 4K.

I think they already are on this track of thinking. Look at the "supplemental computing device" patent they filed ... that's very clearly an upgradable console that's not only upgradable but even shares additional horsepower to other consoles nearby (pretty radical change if they follow through with this).
Also they always have officially described the NX as a "platform" ... you notice they never refer to it as a singular console or portable? That's a fairly large tip off IMO.
