Yes, Wii U level graphics are fine, the problem is that Nintendo cannot adequately support 2 separate platforms which causes both platforms to receive droughts (Wii U more so than 3DS, as 3DS still gets solid Japanese support). That's why so many of us on this site are fans of the unified platform idea, where it's one platform available in different from factors that share a software library. Wii U is missing out on things like Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion, Kid Icarus, Pokémon, etc. and 3DS is missing out on things like Splatoon, Mario Maker, Xenoblade X, Nintendo Land, etc. We also see a lot of redundant titles because of this. In 2013/2014, 3DS received Donkey Kong, Mario Party, Kirby, Yoshi games then in 2014/2015, Wii U received Donkey Kong, Mario Party, Kirby, Yoshi games. With a unified concept this is no longer necessary, Arzest developed the 3DS Yoshi, while Good Feel developed the Wii U Yoshi, instead one of them could have made a Yoshi game while the other made something completely different, either a new IP or the return of an older IP not used in awhile, like Wario Land for example. The same applies for other developers like the team behind Mario Kart, they would no longer need to release a Mario Kart for one device then 3 or so years later release another Mario Kart for the other device. Instead they can release one Mario Kart, support it with DLC for a year or two then move on and make a completely different game, maybe a new IP like they did with Nintendogs back in the day or perhaps revive F-Zero. Then on top of that we would also likely see the unification of 3DS & Wii U 3rd party support. Strong Japanese support+strong indie support+strong kid/family friendly support, and if it can get at least the mainstream western support that Wii U received in its first year (select core titles from EA/Ubi/Acti/WB) than that would make for a very software rich platform. A setup like this would benefit Nintendo & consumers in many ways and I think it could fix a lot of their problems as long as it's executed well, offered at an acceptable price point and has a strong marketing campaign. |
