Neither really have a great story. Neither does Jurassic World or Avengers. They're just big spectacles. 

Avatar 2 IMO will not beat The Force Awakens either, especially if the "gimmick" is just high-frame rate. I watched the Hobbit at 60 fps or whatever it was, it looks like shit. Makes the movie look like it was shot on a video camcorder. 

I think Star Wars Rogue One is going to do massive business next year too. Disney is going to make a fortune with this franchise. It is the golden goose. 

Not having a great story is one thing - all of those movies plain have a bad story.

 

TFA and Avatar have decent stories they're just very derivative (one of A New Hope the other of Pocahontas/Dances With Wolves). 

Avengers, Jurassic World are a tier below. Furious 7 is just plain crap (lol ... I like the franchise but it's true, but I guess what can you do with a seventh movie about driving cars). 

The 80s and 90s had better blockbusters, what the modern day has is safer blockbusters. They don't take as many story risks and have a more consistent quality to them. Empire Strikes Back, Terminator 2, Back to the Future, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., Jurassic Park, Die Hard, even Return of the Jedi are all better written films than the top movies of today. 

The Force Awakens just proves how huge Star Wars is though, it's just a decent Star Wars film without a lot of the mind numbing stupidity/poor acting of the Lucas prequels. And that's all it had to do to earn basically $2 billion WW and completely demolish the domestic record in under a month.
