Imagine the Super NES couldn't run games like Street Fighter 2 or Final Fantasy VI because the chipset was just a moderate upgrade on the NES. 

But SFII on SNES was gimped from the original game.

Only in the same sense that AAA PS4 games are gimped compared to their PC counterparts maxed out.

SNES was more powerful than the Megadrive or the Turbografx-16, and yet it was not overly expensive hardware. Same with the N64 and the Gamecube; hardware as good or better than the competition, yet still able to be sold at affordable prices and at a profit.
