Color was not an innovation because Game Gear and Linx etc. had done it years earlier. Color was just upping the tech. It was a gameboy with... color. Nothing innovative about that at the time.
The DS did NOT beat PSP because of hardware innovation. It beat PSP because of Iwata's idea of creating software for casuals. He wisely saw a market that wasn't being exploited and made software for it. But where is that demographic now? Is there a segment of consumer that will do something like that again? If you look at the console market right now, all I see are core gamers left. We are the ones who are buying games now. Casuals buy iPhones. So, imo, Nintendo doesn't have the option anymore. They're going to have to go the Gameboy Advance rout and try to sell core gamers a device that they'd want to purchase. Mom and Gramma aren't going to be playing with virtual dogs on a dedicated handheld anymore.
