There is very little original work in TFA because Lucas FUCKED up the franchise with the prequels and caused a rift in the fan base which is bad for business. So TFA *unfairly* always had the burden of having to undo the damage done by the prequels and reset the franchise. VIII and IX now can move forward without being burdened by that baggage. 

Anyone who thinks the prequels had good characters (or any characters really period) has no legs to stand on in criticizing VII. Poe Damoreon shows more character in his first five minutes than most of Lucas' prequel characters did in 3 movies worth. 

Any time you want to defend Lucas just let this sink in ... he genuinely in his mind thought Jar-Jar would be a character that would get *huge* laughs from a modern movie audience. Think about that. Wrap your brain around that.

The lightsaber fights in the prequels are likely only decent even because George had minimal invovlement in them, they were choreographed by a guy who was pretty good, in the script they're written fairly simply. But lightsaber fights are the only things in the prequels that work in any way. Watch the prequels without the lightsaber fights. I dare you. I double dare you. 

 

Since we don't know what Lucas had done, you are making up things. You know that Lucas's way of doing Star Wars was much bigger than what they have done? In scale, in special effects, technology, it was a much bigger work. I can only think that if Lucas had done it, it wouldn't have been released yet.

Your explanation for the lack of original work doesn't convince me at all. Why don't you accept the fact that they went for the easy road? They took the elements that everybody loved, to the point of almost being a remake, and to add some new things to introduce new characters.

They just choose the easy road: a middle sized budget with nothing outstanding and rehashing the things the fans loved the most. But they failed with the new characters parts.

Lucas is the one who created Vador, Luke, Han Solo and the whole Star Wars universe. I give him way more credits than your Kathleen something.

In the prequels there were some interesting charachters: Qui Gon and Darth Maul were good, a shame they did not last longer, especially as Dooku was too much of a ghost after. I thought that Palpatine was absolutely perfect and flawless in the prequels.

The prequels had great lightsaber fight (I understand you don't want to speak about the embarassing Kylo Ren/Rey duel) that were epic moment, Maul/Obiwan, Obiwan/Anakin, Yoda/Emperor..... There were also large scale battles and the world making (corsucents, unser sea Naboo).

The main letdown was the plots which got unnecessary complicated, confused or running too many at the same time. But the last one was flawless.

There's a good reason why the light saber duels in the new film were so much more... raw, unrefined and "epic". The film follows on from the original trilogy where the duels were far less choreographed. The mass duels and epic fights in the prequels worked because everything was supposed to be better at that point. The Jedi were at the peak of their power and it showed in the battle sequences. The battles in VII are supposed to be unrefined and rough as none of the characters involved in the lightsaber duels really know what they're doing. They're virtually playing at being Jedi/Sith.

On the characters I actually loved the new characters. They were more believable and actually had more development/backstory than most of the characters in the previous films.
