I'm betting they delayed it because Lucas had a bunch of Jar-Jar, Lets Put Aliens in Indiana Jones type shit ideas in his treatment and they didn't want to go that way. Why else would they throw away a perfectly good scriptment and delay the movie for months? Maybe George "Genius" Lucas had a bunch of shit ideas in there and someone finally had the authority to say "you know what George ... this idea is just bad, we're not going to use it" for the first time in 18 years?

There is very little original work in TFA because Lucas FUCKED up the franchise with the prequels and caused a rift in the fan base which is bad for business. So TFA *unfairly* always had the burden of having to undo the damage done by the prequels and reset the franchise. VIII and IX now can move forward without being burdened by that baggage.
Anyone who thinks the prequels had good characters (or any characters really period) has no legs to stand on in criticizing VII. Poe Damoreon shows more character in his first five minutes than most of Lucas' prequel characters did in 3 movies worth.
Any time you want to defend Lucas just let this sink in ... he genuinely in his mind thought Jar-Jar would be a character that would get *huge* laughs from a modern movie audience. Think about that. Wrap your brain around that. Take a swig of that poop cola and let it wash around in your mouth. Think about it.
The lightsaber fights in the prequels are likely only decent even because George had minimal invovlement in them, they were choreographed by a guy who was pretty good and given freedom to try some things, in the script they're written fairly simply. But lightsaber fights are the only things in the prequels that work in any way. Watch the prequels without the lightsaber fights. I dare you. I double dare you.
